Projects All Over the House

I finally made my green healing salve. It's basically a natural polysporin. We slather ourselves with it for everything. I've been infusing my oil for a year- with comfrey, plantain, chickweed, mullein, yarrow, wild geranium, and chamomile. I have all these plants/weeds in my yard now. Thank you to my friend Jody for sending me her beeswax in the mail. Why does having a friend with bees make me feel so cool?
Charlie sent a hug with us to Dubai for "Special Gramma"

I've been pumping these kids full of Elderberry Syrup all winter. All the kids take it willingly except Scarlet.

Charlie makes these towers, then demolishes them with a detonation.

We studied the tongue and did all kinds of taste testing. Here is my list of what we did:
-name the senses
-talk about sensory nerves
-make nerves out of pipe cleaners/beads
-tongue map of tastes- salt, sweet, bitter, sour
-discuss the new taste umami
-list foods in each category
-learn about tastebuds
-saliva
-explain how smell contributes to tasting
-taste salt, sugar, vinegar, lemon juice using a q-tip dip in the foods then dab on the tongue in different areas. should be a stronger taste in specific spots.
chart the category for the foods.
-play the "fool your tongue" game by eating something, then eating it again while smelling a cotton ball soaked in vanilla. you can't taste the food as well while smelling something else.
-say tongue twisters

These polymer beads are so much fun. Way fun for a sensory bucket.

We dissected a diaper and found the polymer layer inside that does the absorbing.
We measured how much water a diaper can hold and it was AMAZING.

This is one of the best activities we've ever done. Scarlet set up a family mail system. The idea comes from this blog Family Fun. It's been great for lots of reasons- we all write each other cute notes all the time and its motivated Scarlet to learn how to write all our names and to read them too so she can sort the mail each day. We set up a writing station with a mailbox for writing the letters. Scarlet decorated labels to use as stamps for the letters too. Then each day before supper Scarlet takes the mailbox and sorts all the mail into our own boxes. She then calls "Mail Time" so we know we can gather our letters.
So darling!

4 Birthdays in January

Jacob is 7! Jacob extra loves treats. He loves to be silly. He loves math and puzzles. He's a freakishly good reader. He loves to play games. He loves to play animals. He likes getting his hands messy and sticky and gooey- which made Grammy and Baba's gift "Slime Factory" perfect!

I turned 33. Woah. Is there an official phobia for people who despise getting older? I recently found out my brother has the same problem. But ice cream cake does help me feel better :)
My friend Julie sent me the most amazing embroidered head band in the universe. I can't imagine the hours it took. I try not to wear it every day, but I really want to.

Ezzie

Ez turned 2. He loves to sing songs- he's been humming tunes for a while but now he actually sings the words. He says the sweetest prayers these days- love when he folds his chubby arms :)

We had a dragon party for him. Jane sewed dragon teeth into his jeans and he loved it. He'd lift the teeth and say RAWRRRRR. So cute! We made dragon feet and fire breath.

 Ezra loves to play ZINGO.

Some Grammy and Baba time.

I think I have a pic of all three boys in this vest now.

She's a Decade!

Our little Jane had a birthday! I love this sequence of pictures- she's so sick of schoolwork she's losing her marbles...

I made her a necklace for essential oils. You drop the oil on a piece of felt and put the felt inside the filigree locket.

We were all amazed at Jacob's gift idea. He drew outlines of a bunch of girls in dresses and told her it was a coloring book. So cool!
I made her a homemade chocolate hippy cake with rose petals and lavender for sprinkles.

Happy Valentines!

This year for Valentines we made some surprise deliveries around town. It was really fun to ring doorbells and run for it :) We also ate a lot of Nutella...

I made heart egg toast.
I also cut carrots into heart shapes for Amy's chicken soup.
I do these things to amuse myself.
Hazel got stuck sitting in a bucket and wearing my old baby dress. Then, we tapped into some Valentines energy  in a good session of Valentines Yoga.

Tim and I went on our usual Valentine snowshoe. It turned into a good sledding time with the kids too.
This year we can just go in our yard- how cool is that!
Although last Sunday we saw a coyote back there.

We got to share a Valentines dinner with the Voravongs. LOVE those guys! They took us out for some crazy good Thai food, which happens to be our favorite.

Scarlet did a Valentine project this year. She made valentines for everyone and put one on all our doors every night starting Feb 1 until the 14th. We went to the store so she could pick out candies to leave by the doors too. She would skip around delivering her Valentine love and then bounce all over waiting for us to find her surprises. So cute.

I get the best love letters from the kids.

HAPPY VALENTINES!
